Do You Really Know How to Keep Your Young Child Safe? Are you doing everything in your power to keep your child safe? Find out by taking this quiz based on Gavin de Becker's best selling book, Protecting the Gift. The answers may surprise you.

1. How long could it take for your five-year-old to be lured out of the playground by a stranger?

A. 35 seconds.
B. 2 minutes.
C. 10 minutes.
D. My child knows not to leave the park with anyone he doesn't know.

2. True or false: Children should be taught never to talk to strangers.

3. What should you teach your child to do if she's lost?
A. Find a policeman.
B. Go to the nearest woman for help.
C. Start crying and screaming for help.
D. Stay where she is because you'll find her.

4. You hire a babysitter from a reputable agency. Later, you notice your baby exhibiting behavior you've never seen before. You call your
doctor who assures you it's normal. But it continues, so you now wonder about the babysitter. What's next?

A. Shrug off the feeling that anything is amiss. Good child care is difficult to find.
B. Consult your pediatrician again.
C. Install a video camera to observe the babysitter.
D. Fire your babysitter.

Answers:

1. The correct -- and frightening -- answer is about 35 seconds. According to an experiment conducted by Ken Wooden, the author of
Child Lures, it took an average of a little more than half a minute for him to lure children from a playground. He conducted the study with some
of the Oprah staff.

Wooden says, "Oprah's producers and I approached several young mothers in a suburban park to ask for cooperation with our experiment.
Each mother insisted that her child would never leave the park with a stranger, then watched in horror from a distance as her youngster
cheerfully followed me out of the park to look for my puppy."

Parents need to watch their young kids every second. They're simply too young to look after themselves or to know to keep an eye on you.

2. You should have answered FALSE: Your child sees you break this rule all the time. You talk to strangers at the bank, at the supermarket,
or simply because they're nice.

If your child is ever lost, talking to a stranger may be the single greatest asset she has. To seek assistance, describe one's situation,
give a phone number, ask advice, and say "No" -- all these interactions require a child to speak with strangers. What you really want to avoid is your child going somewhere with someone.

3. The best idea is for your child to choose a woman. Going to the nearest person for help is the right impulse, but the problem is that the
nearest person may be a man, and men are statistically more likely to be predators, or at the very least, will not want to get involved.

The best idea is to teach your child to choose a woman. A woman approached by a lost child asking for help is likely to stop what she is
doing, commit to that child, and not rest until the child is safe. This works because it's practical (a woman is almost always around) and
simple (it's easy for your child to learn).

Finally, teaching children to choose someone rather than wait for someone to choose them will be a useful lesson their whole lives.

4. Fire you babysitter. You're being open to what your intuition is telling you. If you don't entirely trust this person, why would you leave your
helpless baby with her? Better to find a new babysitter who you trust entirely, rather than take a chance with one you have even one doubt
about.

No matter what you scored on this quiz, the fact that you took it is a step in the right direction. Your kids are your gifts, and you must
protect them. No one is in a better position to equip them with the tools they need to be safe than you.

One of the major accomplishments of Sensei Sanguinetti's personal commitment to the local community has been the implementation of his Self-Defense/School Safety Program by Dr. Larry Maw, Superintendent of the San Marcos School District. The program began in 1997 at the elementary school level. It has grown in breadth and substance and many children have chosen to pursue the martial art as part of their life style.

Dr. Maw recognized the myriad of Martial Art benefits such as neighborhood safety education and the development of character, self defense, self-discipline and self esteem. He noted that Sensei Sanguinetti posseses a unique style of teaching as well as an understanding for working closely with children. Sensei Sanguinetti emphasizes that school values is an important part of the overall program.

Subsequent to 1997, the Self-Defense/School Safety Program has been implemented in La Costa Meadows Elementary School and Carrillo Elementary School. The results have been very impressive. They include the development of personal safety and self-control for all students who participated. The children have had fun and enjoyed making friends and building lasting relationships with their peers. Parents have been delighted by the positive changes they have noticed in their children both in and outside of school.
